I welcome you to another random corner of the internet. |
These changes were shown to developers, so they are pretty likely to happen. Are you kidding me? Facebook is already one of the ugliest websites on the “new” web, and these changes are just throwing it further down the toilet. The GOP has a better website than Facebook. Seriously. Don’t believe me? Go check it out (it still isn’t my style - still too busy - but point made).
Facebook has got to employ the worst user interface designers on the web (well, second to Myspace). They need to go look up the words “aesthetically” and “pleasing.” Perhaps they should look at the word “minimalism” as well.
Seriously though: Facebook is one of the least responsive companies in web 2.0. Now, I could understand rebuffing user input if they had a clear view of a better future (democracy can be a bitch sometimes), but they most obviously do not. They make changes only to roll those changes back 6 months down the line. Move icons around only to reverse the decision. Generally the design principle seems to be “the more buttons, the more words, the better.”
Look at the interfaces for other players in web 2.0 and you will see: the trend is towards simplicity. Simple interfaces and pages that load in no time at all.
Facebook’s death cannot come soon enough. I am astounded that with the general level of technical expertise floating around the world right now someone is still to create a valid competitor for Facebook to square off with.
